English has two articles only
- A/ An - Is an indefinite article
- The - Is definite article
A - Indefinite Articles
A is used when the next word begins with Consonant sound and Common noun(b,c,d,f,g,h etc..)
Examples:-
- a pen
- a book
- a chair
- a one-dollar note
- a one-man army
An - Indefinite Articles
An is used when the next word begins with a vowel sound (a, e , i, o, u) .
Examples:-
- an apple
- an hour
- an Umbrella
- an MA
- an BA
- an LLB
- an BSC
The- Definite Articles
We use The with
- Something that is unique or there is only one.
Examples:- the Sun , the moon, the sky , the earth
- Second time you talk about the same Noun
Examples:- I bought a shirt. The shirt is red
- Directions
Examples:- the south , the north, the west , the east
- Names of Ocean, Gulfs, Seas and Rivers
Examples:- the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Persian Gulf, the Nile, the Ganga
- Names of countries with united states or islands
Examples:- the United States, the UK, the Philippines etc
- Names of great lakes
Examples:- the Great lakes, the African great Lakes
- Names of mountain ranges
Examples:- the Himalayas, the Andes etc
- Names of group of Islands
Examples:- the Himalayas, the Andes etc
